What to do when your get up and go has got up and gone – my top 3 tips!

I recently asked a question on my social media and was so excited to hear from Untitled design (7)everyone. I asked “What is the biggest struggle in your business today?” and do you know what happened? Loads of amazing business women commented and whilst there were many responses the one that kept cropping up was a whole host of variants on ‘I can’t get motivated’

Honestly, I am there myself from time to time and on occasion I hear myself say exactly the same things and it’s like a slippery slope, difficult to navigate your way back to the top. There are a number of things I do when I feel like I am approaching the rut. The first rule to motivation though is to realise that it’s not real, well of course it is in the dictionary sense of it being a real word BUT motivation is like a processed sugar rush. It gives you a false sense of security and then you crash and burn searching for that elusive high.

What we first need to understand is that in reality we do not need motivation but is in fact habit. You see, habits are simply background tasks, we get to a point where we don’t even notice we are doing them, we just get it done. Think of it like brushing your teeth or flushing the loo. This is ideally where you want to be with those things for your business but there are no shortcuts, forming habits will take time not to mention, some serious unwinding of all that you have over complicated.

Whilst we are forming those habits what do we do? We search for that elusive motivation in the processed kind of way of course! Below are 3 of my favourite steps to boosting your motivation and I hope you find them useful!

Tip #1 Set yourself up with a ‘get motivated’ playlist. Personally, I choose really upbeat songs that make me feel fierce! Mine is full of Janet Jackson, The Pretty Reckless, Jessie J and even Rihanna amongst many others. (In the interests of full disclosure, I also listen to it with headphones to immerse myself and dance like a loon around the house. That’s entirely your prerogative!)

Tip #2 Pick one task and just start it, everything else can wait. Put pen to paper/fingers to keyboard – whatever that task needs just get started, making sure you have limited any distractions (even if you don’t want to start, start!)

Tip #3 Set a timer for that task, do only that task and stop when your timer sounds WITHOUT FAIL. It’s amazing how giving yourself a time limit releases the work beast within but note that it will not work in an ongoing capacity if you go over the time.

These are the first 3 of my go to methods to boost my motivation but I have a whole bag of tricks up my sleeve. My advice is to create yourself a motivational medicine bag and keep it to hand. I swear by mine for those times when habit just doesn’t cut the mustard!
